Managing your Money Effectively

The fact is that there are very few people who have as much money as they would like, so making the best of what you actually have is vital if you want to enjoy life as much as possible.  There are many ways to get the most out of your money, and in this article, we will be looking at some great tips for you to get more with what you have.

The most important part of getting the most out of your money is to budget effectively.  You need to completely plan your outgoings around your income, and save money where possible in order to give yourself as much over as possible that you can save for big purchases or to give yourself a treat.

If you have a limited income, it is vital that you account for every penny in order to keep ahead of your self.  When you are planning how to budget, the first thing to do is to write down all of your outgoings, and prioritise them in order of how essential they are.  Payments on mortgages that you absolutely have to make should be at the top of your list, along with things like your household bills.  Next on the list should be essential purchases such as food.

When you get to the end of your essentials, you should go through the rest of your outgoings, and look at which ones you can save money on, which ones you are paying more than you need to.

Once you know how much free cash you have available, you should take a look at how much money you owe.  Paying off more on any debts such as credit cards will mean that they are cleared sooner, and although this will leave you less money in the short term, it will reduce the cost of servicing the debts in the long run, and ultimately save you a great deal of cash.  Although it may sound counter intuitive when you are trying to manage increase the amount of free money that you have available to start paying out more, getting rid of debts early is a great idea, and will save be worth it in the long run.

If you have any credit cards, which you do not pay off each month in full, consider switching the balance to an interest free credit card, which could save you £200 per year on an outstanding balance of £1,000.  If you do not want to get another credit card, even if it is interest free, you could opt for a secured loan.  If the interest rate is half or even one third of the price of a credit card, you could still save pots of cash.

Look at any unnecessary spending and eradicate it.  The way in which you can most effectively save money without feeling the pinch is to look at where you are wasting money, and stop doing it.  We all have bad habits, but smoking is one of the worst possible.  A packet of fags costs almost £6.  That means if you smoke one packet of twenty every day, your habit costs you almost £200 per month!  Simply stopping smoking can free enough money to give you the freedom to do a lot more, and will also be really beneficial to your health.

Another area where you could be wasting a lot of money is on your weekly shop.  The next time you go to the supermarket, take a close look at everything you put into your trolley, and ask yourself if it would be possible to get a better deal.

One of the best ways of saving money on your weekly shopping is to switch from a weekly to a monthly buying pattern on many of the non perishable items.  Quite a large part of the price of any item you buy from the supermarket is tied up in the cost of the packaging.  It follows then, that if you minimise the packaging on individual small items by buying in bulk, you can save money.  Large packs are not much more expensive than small packs, and you get much more, meaning that they last longer, and you save money.

Another way of reducing the cost of your supermarket shop is to stop buying so many consumer branded items, and switch to the store’s own brand instead.  Quite often, the own brand products are made in the same factory by the same companies who produce the more famous versions, and they are of similar quality.  The price of store brand products is usually between half and two thirds of the price of the main brand version, so by buying them instead, you can really bring down the price of your basket.

The reason why branded goods are more expensive than generic store versions is that a larger percentage of the price is tied up in the advertising, making them more expensive, when compared to a store version, in which the cost of the advertising is spread out over a lot more different products, and therefore makes up a smaller percentage of the individual item.

Many of the supermarkets now offer a budget range to complement the rest of their stock.  These products typically are lower quality than the rest of the stock, come in bland packages, and also offer amazing value for money, being less than half the price of brand items.  While you probably wouldn’t want to replace your whole larder with Tesco Value or Asda Farm Stores products, they are worth considering for essentials where quality is not so important.  One particular area where you can save money on your shopping is with your vegetables.  The value vegetables tend to be a little uglier than the highest quality produce in the supermarket, but this is not a big problem if you are preparing them as part of a meal, in which case their shape does not matter a great deal.

You can save a great deal of money on food and drink by avoiding buying any pre-prepared meals.  By preparing your meals yourself from scratch, rather than buying ready made ones, you can cut the cost of your food budget enormously, and also enjoy food that you have made from fresh, rather than that which has been made in a factory kitchen somewhere.

If you do not take a packed lunch to work with you, and do not have a subsidised canteen in your workplace, then you could be wasting a small fortune.  It you go out for lunch at buy a sandwich and a coke, it may cost you £2 for the sandwich, and another £1 for the coke.  If you made the sandwich yourself, and bought your can from the supermarket, the total price of your lunch would be less than £1.  Doing that every day for a year would mean that you would save almost £500, which you could spend on other things, such as a holiday.

The internet is one of the best tools to help you save money.  Whenever you want to buy something, you will be able to find it for less online.  There are a number of price comparison web sites online where you can search for products and compare how much they cost in different stores.  The difference in price that two different stores charge for the same item can be huge, but by using what is called competitive intelligence you can find the best deal on anything from shoes through to plasma TV sets.  Price comparison websites like Kelkoo now allow you to compare pretty much any product or service that you can imagine, and the potential savings that are available to you are enormous – particularly over the price that you may have to pay on the high street.

If you the reason why you want to save money is in order to fund a holiday, then there are a number of things that you can do in order to get more for your money.  For a start, never travel during the school holidays.  If you go away when all the families do, you will pay around 3 times as much for your trip, and spend your entire holiday queuing up.  In short, if you travel when everyone else does, you will get less for more.

Travel out of season, use price comparison services to find the cheapest flights and best value hotels, and car hire, and combine the products yourself.  A travel agent will add a fat fee onto the price of your trip, so by booking online and getting the various bits and pieces yourself, you can save a fortune.

Getting the most from your money does not necessarily mean that you need to get less from life.  You need to spend money sensibly, save cash where you can and be careful with your investments and credit cards, and instead of paying for things that you do not need, keep your money for the things that you really want.  Never borrow when you can save, and never pay more for credit than you need to.

The Internet has opened up a world where you can control what you spend like never before, and manage your expenses to an extent that was only dreamed about a few years ago.  Take advantage of all the tools that are available to you in order to keep as much cash in your pocket as you can.  Never be afraid to ask for something more from your suppliers, and never allow yourself to waste anything.

When you start to manage your money effectively, you can stop being a slave to it, and instead allow it to work for you.
