Managing Credit Cards
One of the most common ways a person can mismanage money is to over-charge their credit card. With cash, a person can never spend more money than they have. Obviously a cashier will not accept a paper claiming the promise of cash in the future. But with credit cards, banks will allow people to spend as much as they want, despite the amount shown in their accounts, knowing that they will be able to charge high interest on the money owed and not paid. Thus, here are a couple of tips to help one never get themselves into this situation.
For starters, it is always a good idea to know how much money is actually in your account. A lot of banks are switching to online banking and allow their customers and clients to log in and check their balances anytime they want. You can look at how much money you have and create a virtual budget to follow during shopping or purchases.
Of course, for some people even knowing how much they have won’t stop reckless spending. If that is the case for you, just stop bringing your credit card with you to shopping trips. Take out a certain amount of cash from an ATM machine or the bank your money is in, and spend that. It may seem a little old-fashioned and time-consuming, but at least you won’t be stuck with a bill for a thousand dollars more than you have to pay!
If you still want the comfort and ease of using a credit card, there are two options besides solely using cash. The first is to obtain a debit card. A debit card is like a credit card, as most people know, but draws upon money located within your bank account. This means that you can’t overcharge your bank account as the debit card will be refused when the bank account runs out of money. The second option is to set a spending limit on your credit card. Banks will set your spending limit as low as $500. If you don’t have $500, you probably shouldn’t have a credit card in the first place. This spending limit cuts off your purchasing when you reach the amount it is set at. If you try to charge more, it will deny you the purchase.
There are other options as well. Gift card debit cards are becoming more and more prevalent in today’s society. This gift cards are loaded with a set amount of money and can be used anywhere a credit card can. Once the card runs out of money, they can be disposed of. Gift card debit cards can be found at most banks and money can be added to them through a bank account or cash.
In conclusion, it is never a good idea to overcharge a credit card. You will not only end up spending more money than you have, but you may very well have to pay additional interest on the amount you cannot repay the bank. It is very hard to manage money and follow a budget if you do this.
